Abstract

In order to study the relationship between selenium and the occurrence and development of pneumonia in children, the activities of selenium and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in plasma and white blood cells and urine of 57 hospitalized children with pneumonia and 85 normal children were measured. To determine the selenium content, an experimental animal model was established to verify and supplement the clinical results. Results: The selenium content and GSH-Px activity in plasma and leukocytes of children with pneumonia decreased to varying degrees; the selenium content in urine increased. After being infected with mycoplasma pneumonia, the incidence rate of interstitial pneumonia in rats in the selenium-rich group was lower; after the low-selenium group was fed sodium selenite by gavage, the disease was mild and the course of the disease was short. This shows that the consumption of selenium in the body of children with pneumonia increases; animal experiments suggest that good selenium nutritional status can reduce the incidence of pneumonia; supplementing selenium in the early stage of pneumonia can alleviate the condition of pneumonia and shorten the course of the disease.
