Abstract

This article reports the results of a retrospective survey of deaths of children under 5 years old in 1989 in Maternal and Child Health Project (MCH) counties of Shaanxi Province. The neonatal mortality rate (NMR) was 45.64‰, the infant mortality rate (IMR) was 66.12‰, and the mortality rate of children under 5 years old (U5MR) was 84.07‰. Neonatal deaths accounted for 69.03‰ of infant deaths and 69.03‰ of child deaths under 5 years of age. The infant mortality rate accounts for 54.29% of the deaths of children under 5 years old. Pneumonia is the number one cause of death in children under 5 years old, accounting for about 1/3 of child deaths. The top 5 causes of death in children under 5 years old are pneumonia, neonatal asphyxia, premature birth, diarrhea and accidents. This article also analyzes the factors related to the death of children under 5 years old, and puts forward preliminary ideas for reducing the mortality rate of children under 5 years old.
